BOISE, Idaho - The Fresno State soccer team was valiant in a 1-0 loss to Hawai'i during the Western Athletic Conference final on Sunday in Boise, Idaho. The Rainbow Wahine scored in the 60th minute on a header from Emma Makepa-Foley that hit the left post before going in. The Bulldogs threatened many times during their third-straight appearance in the WAC final, but fell just short to top-seeded Hawai'i.
Freshman goal keeper Kaity Revel made an excellent save in the first half. Hawai'i crossed the ball into the box and Rainbow Wahine forward Taryn Fukuroku headed the ball towards the goal. But Revel made a quick adjustment to get her hands on the ball and control it for the save.
Fresno State was dangerous throughout the match. Junior forward Nicole Gutierrez crossed to junior midfielder Alison Sill for a header that was just wide to the left. On a free kick in the 35th minute, senior defender Andrea Alires made a tremendous shot that keeper Kori Lu barely saved as the ball hit the cross bar and nearly went in.
In the early minutes of the second half, senior midfielder Chelsea Davis made an exceptional shot that was just high. Davis was again making things happen when she crossed the ball into the box in the 55th minute. Gutierrez got a head on the ball and directed it towards Sill who took a shot that went just wide to the left.
The Bulldogs out-shot Hawai'i 15-9 overall and 6-3 on shots-on-goal. Fresno State's back line of Alires, Selena Gill, Aubrey Tennant and Bradlee DeShane kept Hawai'i out of rhythm for most of the game and midfielder Christina Gilbert was very active with five shots.
The Bulldogs had six all-conference performers and had four named to the all-tournament team. Senior forward Andrea Salvador scored two goals during the weekend as was named to the all-tournament team. Alires, Sill and Revel also earned spots on the team.
For eight seniors it was the last hurrah after four years in which they made three WAC tournament finals, winning the regular season title in 2006 and the conference tourney in 2005 to advance to the NCAA tournament.
The loss snapped Fresno State's five-match winning streak in which the team recorded three shutouts and scored 13 goals. The Bulldogs finish the season 13-7-1, going 7-1 at home, 5-5-1 on the road and 1-1 on neutral sites.
