Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Fresno State men's basketball closed the first half strong and began the second half with the same energy, but couldn't sustain it over 40 minutes, losing to Sam Houston State 68-57 on Saturday night a the Johnson Coliseum.
Fresno State made a run early in the second half, cutting the lead to 41-39, but the offense couldn't keep up with Sam Houston State in the second half. Fresno State shot a season-low 27.7 percent from the field and a season-low 12.5 percent from 3-point range.
With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 3-3 overall, and continue their two-game road trip on Tuesday, when they play at Winston-Salem State. Sam Houston State improved to 4-0 on the season and improved its home non-conference winning streak to 40 games, third longest in the country.
"Sam Houston State is a good team and on the road it doesn't get any easier," Fresno State head coach Steve Cleveland said. "We didn't shoot the ball well tonight and we need to bounce back on Tuesday at Winston-Salem."
The Bulldogs were led by Hector Hernandez, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Bell had 16 points and seven assists and Bryan Harvey had eight points and seven rebounds. Eddie Miller added seven points and two assists.
In the first half, the Bulldogs closed on a 5-2 run, capped off by a Hernandez 3-pointer at the buzzer to trail 34-29. Hernandez led the way offensively with 11 points and he added five rebounds.
Offensively the Bulldogs had some good looks to begin the game, but couldn't get anything to drop. Fresno State shot 26.5 percent (9-34) in the opening 20 minutes, but started coming on strong as half drew closer.
Miller connected on 1 of 3 from long range and finished the half with seven points. Bell had four points, three assists and two steals.
Sam Houston State didn't shoot much better than the Bulldogs in the first half, connecting on 14 of 33 from the field and 3 of 12 from 3-point range.
Fresno State returns to action on Tuesday, November 27 when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Winston-Salem State at 4 p.m. (PST).
