FRESNO, Calif.- - The Fresno State women's basketball team lost to the University of Utah 82-58 on Saturday at the Save Mart Center. The win ups Utah's record to 5-2 while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-5. The first five games have been a tough stretch for Fresno State as its first five opponents had a combined record of .709 coming into Saturday's game.
"I want to give credit to Utah," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "They are a good team and I am very excited for coach Elliott. She is a very good basketball coach. It was a good game for us to learn who we are. We have had five tough opponents. While we had a tough start we have also learned a lot. We have a resilient group and they are not going to quit. I think we'll bounce back ok."
Fresno State was led in scoring by Tierre Wilson's 19 points. She also had a team-best five assists and two steals. Hayley Munro added 12 points and seven rebounds while Emma Andrews contributed 10 points and three steals.
The Bulldogs were 17 for 19 from the free throw line. Rachel Majewski came off the bench to score seven points in a season high 23 minutes.
"I found three good players in the post for us tonight," Wiggins said. "We have a couple of point guards who did a good job. Their shot selection was a lot better. I thought Tierre got the shots she needed and scored a quality amount of points. We made free throws tonight and we rebounded. What we struggled with was the first 13 minutes of the game giving up 16 or 17 lay ups."
Fresno State never led in the game. They trailed by eight points at 24-16 with 9:33 to play until halftime. But the Utes led 51-30 at halftime and the closest the Dogs got the rest of the way was 16 points.
Utah guard Leilani Mitchell set a Fresno State home court record with 18 assists, 15 coming in the first half.
