TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore right-hander Merryann Barr singled home two runs and pitched solid in 21st-ranked Fresno State's 3-1 victory over the Northwestern State Demons. Sophomore pitcher Robin Mackin pitched the final four outs to get the save, helping Fresno State get its first win of the season.
Fresno State tallied the first run of the ball game when senior catcher Nichole Willis singled home sophomore infielder Haley Perkins from second with two outs. Perkins got aboard with a infield single and stole second before Willis' liner into right field.
Fresno State increased its lead in the top of the fifth on Barr's one-out single that scored Perkins and Willis. Perkins had led off the inning with a single to right immediately followed by Willis' single to right. Junior infielder Jenna Cervantez sacrificed to advance the runners just before Barr soft liner into left.
Northwestern State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Margaret Patterson hit a solo homer to center. The Demons got another runner aboard in the inning before sophomore Robin Mackin relieved Barr to get the final out of the inning.
Barr got out of some early in the trouble in the bottom of the first. With Northwestern's Randi Stuard at third and one out, Barr struck out Amanda Glenn and induced clean-up hitter Kelly Corliss into an inning-ending ground out.
Barr got her first win of the year, allowing on run on five hits in five and two-thirds innings. Barr struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Both Perkins and Willis had outstanding days at the plate. Perkins was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Willis was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs take on New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
