MALIBU, Calif. - On another gorgeous day in Malibu, Calif. the Fresno State Bulldogs (5-8)lost a close contest against the No. 15 Pepperdine Waves (9-3) in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-2.
Not much offense was brought to the ballpark from both clubs but pitching became the answer. Justin Wilson (2-1, 2.76) grabbed the start for the Bulldogs throwing five and one-third innings allowing six hits on two runs and tallying five strikeouts. Tanner Scheppers relieved Wilson throwing two and two-thirds innings allowing one run on four hits.
Brett Hunter (2-1, 3.00) earned the start for the Waves and threw just as well completing seven innings allowing two runs on two hits.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fourth inning Pepperdine just about escaped out of trouble when Brian Lapin hit into a double play. In the next at bat the Bulldogs did score a run when Erik Wetzel advanced from third to home plate on a passed ball. Fresno State ended the inning on a ground out.
The Bulldogs led 1-0 at the end of four innings of play.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Pepperdine recorded two runs by managing three hits. The inning started off with a double to right center by Denny Duron. Adrian Ortiz then singled to center field advancing Duron to third. Danny Worth doubled to right center scoring the Waves first run. To lead the game 2-1 the last run of the inning was recorded on an RBI from Eric Thames grounding out to shortstop Todd Sandell scoring Ortiz from third.
The Bulldogs were down 2-1 but not out of the game. In the top of the seventh inning Sandell parked a fastball down the middle outside the left field wall tying the score at 2-2.
Just when momentum slowly shifted Fresno State ran in to a little bit of a problem in the bottom of the ninth inning when the first two Wave batters singled, putting runners at first and third with no outs on a throwing error by the Bulldogs.
Jason Breckley came in to pitch and loaded the bases with no outs on an intentional walk to have a force out at any base. The next Pepperdine batter lined out to left field which enabled left fielder Loren Storey to get a quick throw into the infield. Looking for a double play or another out the next Wave batter singled to right center winning the game 3-2.
The last game of the series between the Bulldogs (5-8) and the No. 15 Waves (9-3) will be played tomorrow with game time at 1:00 p.m.
