No. 22 Bulldogs Beat Long Island, Fall to Virginia

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Bulldogs beat Long Island 4-1 in Fresno State's fourth game of the Palm Springs Classic, Saturday evening in Cathedral City, Calif. A four-run first inning held up for the Bulldogs, who improved to 7-6 on the season.
Fresno State's four-run outburst in the first started when sophomores Robin Mackin and Haley Perkins led off the game with back-to-back singles.. Sophomore Merryann Barr doubled down the left field line one out later to score Mackin and Perkins. Freshman Lisamarie Coronado then tripled, scoring Barr and junior Jenna Cervantez.
Barr pitched four and two-thirds for the victory, improving to 2-1 on the year. She allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out one. Mackin relieved Barr in the fifth, helping Fresno State get out of jam. Mackin got her second save by pitching two and a third innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out six.
The Bulldogs will conclude the Palm Springs Classic with an 11 a.m. game against Penn State on Saturday.

Nicole Koren's ground ball to short in the bottom of the eighth scored Elea Crockett from third to give Virginia a 10-9 win over the Bulldogs in Fresno State's first game on Saturday.
Fresno State trailed early after Virginia scored five runs in the first inning. Abby Snyder's two RBI double highlighted the inning for the Mountaineers.
The Bulldogs responded with a huge inning of their own in the top of the fourth. Powered by five doubles, the Bulldogs scored eight runs to take an 8-5 advantage.
After Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, Fresno State took a 9-8 lead on Barr's RBI ground out. But again Virginia answered to knot the score at 9-9.
Barr led the Bulldogs with three RBI. Perkins was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
