FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Equestrian team traveled into the heart of Texas to take on the SMU Mustangs and TCU Horned Frogs and came away with a pair of victories. The Dogs beat SMU by a score of 9-3 and edged TCU in a tie-breaking match that was tied 8-8.
The Dogs were led by Cambria Kissell, who was named the Most Outstanding Rider in the Equitation of the Fences, and Lisa Well, who claimed the top rider in Equitation over the Flat against the Mustangs.
Fresno State won nine of the 12 matches in an all-English show held at Fieldstone Park in Mansfield, Texas.
Against TCU, a match that featured both English and Western disciplines, the Bulldogs won in a tie breaker after the teams each won eight matches. The Dogs outscored the Horned Frogs 1,161-1,059.5 in the combined scoring of the entire match to win the tie breaker. The Dogs dominated the Reigning and the Equitation over the Flat events, taking three of the four matches in each discipline.
Cambria Kissell, a junior from Carlsbad, Calif., had a good weekend for the Bulldogs, earning MVP honors in both matches.
"This was a good weekend for our team" said head coach Becky Malmo. "Against SMU we showed great depth with our English team. Cambia and Lisa performed very well. Against TCU, both our English and Western teams competed at a high level. We are looking forward to returning home and competing in front of our family, friends and Bulldog fans."
Fresno State returns to action in two weeks hosting New Mexico State and Texas A&M dual matches on Saturday, Feb. 17, and Sunday, Feb 18. Both matches will be held at the Fresno State Student Horse Center on campus. Competition begins at 8 a.m. each day.
