Softball Cruises Past Nevada in WAC Opener

Reno, NV - Fresno State didn't waste any time picking up its first WAC victory of the season Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to win 10-0 over Nevada in five innings in Reno.
Fresno State has won four straight games and won its WAC opener to improve to 25-11 overall and 1-0 in WAC play. Nevada dropped to 7-23 overall and 0-1 in WAC play.
While the offense exploded against Nevada, Robin Mackin was outstanding on the mound. Mackin allowed one hit and struck out five to improve to 18-6 in the circle.
Offensively three players hit home runs for the Bulldogs. Jenna Cervantez hit her fourth, Michelle Palazuelos hit her second and Ashley White hit her first home run of the season.
Cervantez, White and Palazuelos each finished 2 for 3 and Merryann Barr went 2 for 2. Cervantez had four RBI, Robin Mackin had two RBI and White added two RBI.
Fresno State got on the board in the second inning, thanks to two solo home runs by Ashley White and Michelle Palazuelos. White hit her first home run of the season over the right centerfield fence to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. One batter later Palazuelos hit her second home run of the season down the left field line.
The Bulldogs added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Palazuelos reached on an error to start the inning, followed by a double by Haley Perkins. Jenna Cervantez singled home Palazuelos and Kristin Sylvester singled home Perkins. Merryann Barr walked to load the bases and Robin Mackin drove in two runs with a single up the middle with two outs to cap off the scoring.
The two teams return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
