Offensive Explosion Leads Bulldogs Past Hornets, 16-7

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (14-17, 2-2) defeated first place conference opponent Sacramento State (9-18, 4-3) by a score of 16-7 Friday night at Pete Beiden field in front of 2,014 fans.
The Bulldogs came out swinging in their first at bat with the first three batters grabbing a hit with one runner scoring. Two more runs came home when Ozzie Lewis doubled to left field and the last run advanced to home when Alan Ahmady singled up the middle at 4-0.
Fresno State took a five run lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brian Lapin singled on a hard hit ball to the shortstop scoring Todd Sandell.
The Fresno State dwindled in the top of the fourth inning when Sacramento State scored five runs on four hits and two Bulldog errors. Three of the runs scored on a Tim Wheeler home run to left field. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the fourth inning bumping their lead back up to five runs at 10-5 scoring one run on a double steal, one run on a wild pitch and the last run on a single from Dan Grubb.
Fresno Stated added six more runs and six hits in the sixth and eighth inning to take home a 16-7 victory. Alan Ahmady hit one home run tonight in the top of the sixth inning and now leads the club with five home runs on the season.
Junior centerfield Brian Lapin continues to provide offense for the Bulldogs as he went 3-for-5 tonight with one double and two singles.
"We are starting to come around with confidence," said Lapin. "We are approaching each at bat with an aggressive mindset. Now that we have played 32 games on the season we have a good feel for what to expect from each other."
Sophomore second baseman Erik Wetzel has been red hot as he went 4-for-4 with four singles and three RBI's tonight. He is currently leading the team with a .372 batting average.
"We went up to bat tonight with a mentality to hit," said Wetzel. "Things are coming together.
Fresno State finished the night connecting on 20 hits in 40 at bats. Both Alan Ahmady and Dan Grubb went 2-for-4 on the night. Steve Susdorf had two stolen bases on the night and the Bulldogs combined for a total of five.
The Bulldogs will continue series action at Beiden Field against Sacramento State tomorrow for a 6:05 p.m. start. The final game of the series will conclude Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. start.
