Softball Cruises To Victory Friday Against Utah State

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team didn't waste any time getting on the board Friday night and the runs kept coming for the Bulldogs. Fresno State scored three runs in the first and went on to win 8-0 in the opening game of a three-game series with Utah State at Bulldog Diamond.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 27-12 on the season and move to 3-1 in WAC games. Utah State falls to 9-18 overall and 0-1 in its first WAC contest of the year.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Game 2 will follow with approximately 20 minutes between games.
Robin Mackin led the Bulldogs both on the mound and at the plate. Mackin went 2 for 3 with three RBI and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out eight batters.
Kristin Sylvester stayed hot at the plate with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI and Haley Perkins scored three runs. Jenna Cervantez hit her fifth home run of the year and Nichole Willis had an RBI double.
Fresno State jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on two hits. Haley Perkins led the inning off with a walk, Jenna Cervantez reached on an error and Kristen Sylvester walked to load the bases. Merryann Barr drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Robin Mackin provided the big two-out single to score two runs.
In the second inning the Bulldogs added another run when Sylvester drove in Perkins from second. Perkins reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to get into scoring position. Sylvester singled up the middle with two outs to score the speedy Perkins.
The runs kept coming for Fresno State in the third inning. Merryann Barr led the inning off with a double and the next batter Nichole Willis doubled to right center to score Barr, giving the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
Fresno State added to its lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead. The big damage of the inning came when Jenna Cervantez hit her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence, scoring Perkins. Robin Mackin singled home the final run of the game with her third RBI of the night.
