Dogs Win "Best in the West" Show

FRESNO, Calif. - If this weekend's home show is any indication, the Bulldog Equestrian is peaking as the season winds down. The Bulldogs had a multitude of outstanding performances in both the English and Western disciplines and won the team title by nearly 20 points in the "Best in the West" show held at the Student Horse Center. Sunday's hero for Fresno State was Kirsten Sohns, who was named the MVP of the Equitation on the Flat, with a score of 81 on the horse Duke.
The Bulldog English squad advanced to the finals after scoring eight points in bracket competition. In the final English match, the Dogs tied Tennessee-Martin 3-3 but lost the cumulative tie-breaker by four points (390-386).
With a second place finish in English and a dominating win in Saturday's Western competition, it scored a combined 64 points. UTM was second with 46, followed by South Dakota State with 30. TCU, SMU and Delaware State rounded out the field in the new six-team tournament format.
"I like this new format," said coach Becky Malmo. "It was great because we had a good meet against some good teams and in this tournament format, we were able to get a lot of different young ladies in the meet. We had some outstanding performances. Kirsten (Sohns) rode very well and Morgan McDonald continues to perform at a high level. We are looking forward to going to Oklahoma State, a team that hasn't lost this season. All in all, it was great to host these schools. I have to give a lot of credit to our assistant coaches, who did a wonderful job to make this a successful event."
Lisa Wells, Jennifer Jory and Katie Nenneker all picked-up wins in bracket play. Wells and Jory each scored an 81 while Nenneker had a 78. Shannon Ragsdale scored an 80 in the Flat.
In the championship match Noelle Dukes scored an 80 to pick up a victory in Flat. McDonald and Lindsay Blair scored an 81 and 80, respectively, to lead the squad with wins of UTM in Fences.
Delaware State defeated TCU 4-2 in the fith/sixth place match, while SMU defeated South Dakota State 5-1 in the third place match.
The Dogs are off until March 16 when they travel to take on undefeated Oklahoma State on Stillwater.
