FRESNO. Calif. - While Fresno State lost a tough match to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, several Bulldogs had outstanding performances. A Bulldog rider won MVP honors in three of the four disciplines, but the Dogs lost several close matches dropping the dual by a score of 12-4.
Leading the way for Fresno State was Kirsten Sohns, who was selected MVP in Equitation on the Flat. It was the third time this season Sohns has won an MVP award in a meet. Sarah Barnes, a junior from Merced, was the top performer earning MVP honors in reining and sophomore Rebecca Flood, Tollhouse, Calif., was the MVP in Western Horsemanship. They combined for three of Fresno State's wins in the meet.
"All in all, the competition was very good and we had some really good performances," said head coach Becky Malmo. "We just lost to some outstanding riders who out up some really better scores, so I can't be too upset with that. We are disappointed we didn't win, but somedays you perform well and someone is just a little better."
The Dogs continue their road trip at Manhattan, Kans., against Kansas State for a meet that starts Saturday. The Dogs and Wildcats will square off in Western competition on Saturday and the English teams will compete Sunday.
