FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team is in 14th place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational after round one. The Bulldogs shot an eight over par 296 today at the par 72 Karsten golf course in Tempe, Ariz. Oregon (277) is in the top spot by one stroke over USC who finished 10-under. Texas Tech (279) is in third and the host team Arizona State is in fourth with seven under.
Matt Ryan shot one over par 73 today to tie for 44th place. Grant Doverspike and Matt Shaw tied for 58th place after shooting a 74/+2. Brad Wyatt and Gunnar Avinelis shot a 75/+3 to tie for 66th place.
"This golf course has three diabolically difficult holes," Watney said. "On number 16 and 18 we played those two holes 15-over. We finished eight over, so the rest of the golf course was played under par.Those couple of holes hurt us but are attitudes are good."
Individually, Derek Sipe is in the lead after a first round of 65/-7 with New Mexico's Charlie Beljian one stroke behind.
"We're going to aim toward winning the WAC to qualify for the NCAA," Watney said. "We got to focus on improving."
