Fresno State men's golf team (296-296-289 - 881/+17) finished the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in 14th place in Tempe, Ariz. Oregon (844/-20) finished the tournament on top of Arizona State (847) who moved up two spots on the leaderboard today. Texas A&M (849) took third followed by USC (850) and Arizona (852) for the top five.
The Bulldogs were led by Matt Ryan (73-74-68 -215) who shot an impressive third round four under par 68 today to tie for 23rd place.
"Matt Ryan had a fantastic round today, with one of the lowest scores of the day," said head coach Mike Watney. "Our other guys did very good too so I'm hoping to ride the momentum into BYU and eventually the WAC Championships. We're coming home feeling a little better today."
Matt Shaw (74-75-72 - 221) and Brad Wyatt (75-71-75 - 221) tied for 50th finishing five over par. Gunnar Avinelis (75-78-74 - 227) tied for 75th place and Grant Doverspike (74-76-79 - 229) is in 79th place.
"Today was a lot better day for us," Watney said. "The weather was rough with the wind and we played a lot better. If we play like this we have a chance to win it at the WAC."
Individually, New Mexico's Charlie Beljan pulled ahead of Oregon's Derek Sipe to clinch the title today. Beljan capped a third round score of 68 to finish 15-under 201.
The Bulldogs will participate in the BYU Cougar Classic April 20-21 at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah before heading to the WAC Championships.
