The Fresno State (305-318-296 - 919) women's golf team finished in fifth place out of seven at the 2007 WAC Championship in Las Cruces, NM. The Bulldogs finished their season with the low score of the day 296 to move them up one position.
"We had the low score of the day, which was good," said head coach Angie Cates. "We had a better round today, and it's nice to leave on a good note. It is just disappointing we hurt ourselves yesterday."
The Bulldogs were lead by junior Laura Luethke who tied for second place today with Idaho's Renee Skidmore. Luethke was seven strokes behind San Jose State's Erica Moston (217). Luethke shot a first round 70, then struggled in the second round with an 81. She finished the tournament strong after carding a 73 in the third round to finish with an eight over 224.
"Laura had a good tournament, she had a strong first and third round," Cates said. "It's her best finish of the year and I'm glad it was in the conference championship. Obviously she wanted to win this tournament and came close, but she will save her win for when we play the WAC Championship in Fresno next year."
Sophomore Jennifer Shipley (80-76-74 -230) tied for 12th place today after improving in the third round with a 74. Senior Tiffany Veerkamp (83-81-72) tied for 24th place after posting a 72 today to finish with 236/+20. Taylor Siebert (75-84-78 - 237) tied for 26th place with senior Brittany Cooley (80-80-77 - 237).
"I am proud of our seniors, we will miss them," Cates said of Veerkamp and Cooley. "Tiffany had a great round today, she finished strong."
Shipley and Luethke were both named First-Team All-WAC. Shipley had her best finish when she won the title at the UNLV Spring Invitational where she shot her low round of 64. Luethke had her best finish of the season today, tied for second with a low round of 70.
"Jennifer and Laura both had a great year and are very deserving of getting on the First-Team All-WAC," Cates said. "I am very happy for both of them."
Idaho won the WAC Championship with a three round total of 906/+42, three strokes over San Jose State (909). Hawaii (911) finished in third followed by Nevada (915). With Fresno State (919) in fifth, New Mexico State (933) and Boise State (935) followed in sixth and seventh.
