FRESNO, Calif. - The National Golf Coaches Association announced the 2006-07 student-athlete and coaches awards for Division I Women's College Golf. Winners were recognized at the NGCA Division I Awards Banquet held in Daytona Beach, Florida on Friday evening, May 25. Sophomore Jennifer Shipley was among one of the recipients earning the Kim Moore Spirit Award.
This spirit award is dedicated to Kim Moore, who played golf for the University of Indianapolis (1999-2003). Kim was an inspiration to all as she persevered through many physical challenges while playing collegiate golf. Her positive outlook and dedication toward the game was only out done by her sense of humor and passion for the game.
The purpose of this award is to recognize and honor a student-athlete who exemplifies a great spirit toward the game of golf, a positive attitude on and off the golf course, a role model for her team and mental toughness in facing challenges.
Shipley received the award after a strong performance this season while exemplifying all the above characteristics. Shipley's season included a handful of accolades on the year. Shipley earned first-team all-WAC along with a WAC golfer of the month and two-time WAC golfer of the week. Shipley shot a low round 64 in the third round of the UNLV Spring Invitational to go into a playoff with Idaho's Kelly Nakashima to win the title. Shipley was also the lone representative to advance to the NCAA Western Regional for Fresno State where she tied for 28th place.
"Jennifer fought through some tough set backs the past two years and really stayed strong through adversity," said head coach Angie Cates. "She is tough, and she's a fighter. She has shown a lot of endurance through the past season and I'm happy the award committee recognized her with this award."
