FRESNO, Calif. - Former Fresno State forward Dominic McGuire was selected as the 47th pick of the 2007 NBA Draft on Thursday night. McGuire was chosen by the Washington Wizards and leaves the Bulldogs after his junior season.
McGuire set the single-season blocks record last season for the Bulldogs with 114 and was named Second Team All-WAC, WAC All-Defensive Team and WAC All-Newcomer Team.
The San Diego native, McGuire becomes the Fresno State player drafted since the 2002 season. McGuire played one season with the Bulldogs, averaging 13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 3.2 assists per game.
"I'm extremely excited for Dom," Fresno State Head Coach Steve Cleveland said. "Reaching the NBA has been a goal for Dom since he was young. He grew a lot this past year and it was great having the opportunity to work with him for the past two years."
McGuire, along with senior Quinton Hosley, helped lead the Bulldogs to a 22-10 overall record and a postseason berth to the NIT.
McGuire, who transferred to Fresno State from California, credits Bulldog head coach Steve Cleveland for helping him reach his dream of making the NBA.
The 6-8 McGuire can play several positions and is a strong defensive presence. He becomes the first player drafted since three players were drafted in 2002 from Fresno State in Melvin Ely, Chris Jeffries and Tito Maddox.
