WAC Preseason Poll Released

FRESNO, Calif. - The 2007 Western Athletic Conference preseason poll was released Monday (July 31) and the Fresno State Bulldogs were selected eighth by the coaches in the nine-team conference with 20 points.
Defending WAC volleyball champion Hawai`i was selected first with 64 total points and eight of the nine first-place votes. The Wahine eliminated the Bulldogs from the conference tournament in 2006. The 2007 Bulldog team returns eight letter-winners, six starters and brings in eight newcomers. Lacey Gera, the WAC Freshman of the Year is returning as a sophomore at the outsider hitter position along with senior Angela Wiggins. Wiggins finished the 2006 season ranked tenth in conference with 3.42 kills per game.
Head coach Ruben Nieves is in his third year with the Bulldogs with the help from assistant coach Fernanda Habiger, also in her third season, and new assistant coach Lee Nelson.
New Mexico State was picked second with 55 points and San Jose State, which received the other first-place vote, finished tied for third with Idaho with 44 points. Nevada was picked fifth with 36, while Boise State was picked sixth with 30. Utah State finished in seventh place with 22 points, followed by Fresno State and Louisiana Tech, with nine points.
Fresno State begins the 2007 season on the road at the University of Washington tournament in Seattle, Wash., August 24-25. The first home match for the Bulldogs will be August 30 as they host Idaho State at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center.
After five seasons in Reno, the WAC Volleyball Tournament moves to Las Cruces, N.M. on the campus of New Mexico State. The nine-team tournament will be held November 15-17.
