FRESNO, Calif. - Chris Lewis, a redshirt freshman on the Fresno State football team, has been given a program suspension for the fall semester of 2007.
A program suspension means Lewis may not participate in any team activities, including practices, team meetings, or weight training sessions. He will be allowed to retain his scholarship, use the academic services provided all student-athletes, and utilize the Ricchiuti Strength and Condition Center at times when the football team is not present.
The suspension was authorized by Fresno State Athletics Director Thomas Boeh following an investigation and recommendation by the Athletics Code of Conduct Committee. Lewis' suspension will be reviewed in February of 2008, at which time his future with the program for the second semester will be determined.
"We are disappointed to have to suspend a student-athlete for an entire season," Boeh said. "However, the nature of Chris Lewis' recent actions has compelled the Code of Conduct Committee and our department to respond with this penalty."
"Chris Lewis is not going to be part of our football team this season," said head coach Pat Hill. "His actions have led us to the determination that he needs some time away from football to get his life in order. If he gets himself headed in the right direction, we'll consider having him rejoin our team. We support him and care about him, but his actions are not to the standard of his teammates and he will suffer the consequences. One of the greatest responsibilities of a head coach is education. We are very proactive in the lives of all of our players and proper education is a big part of it. We hope this will help Chris and help him get his life in order."
"I made some mistakes but I have to be a man and own up to those mistakes," said Lewis. "I accept the consequences. I have to make changes in my life and I know that. I apologize to my friends and family and teammates. I don't want to be perceived as a bad person. I've made mistakes and I'm going to own up and take it like a man."
