"We are working very hard to build a top-notch Division I volleyball program here," said head coach Ruben Nieves. "We know we can't do it by ourselves. We have to have a community that not only supports us but also comes out to watch the team play and cheer us on. Since the day I arrived I felt that there is no greater form of support that an individual or a family can give to our program then being at the gym or at the arena watching us compete and cheering us on."
This year's schedule includes 13 home matches. After Idaho State, Fresno State will host UC Davis (Aug. 31) and St. Mary's (Sept. 2). Most of the home matches will be in September as Oregon State of the Pac-10 arrives in town for a Sept. 11 match. New Mexico State (Sept. 13) and Louisiana Tech (Sept. 15) will open up Western Athletic Conference play.
Nevada (Sept. 22) and Utah State (Sept. 29) close out September play before Boise State arrives October 4. Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 16 will be the last non-conference match of the season at the Save Mart Center. The home schedule ends with three matches in a row starting with San Jose State (Nov. 1), defending WAC Champion Hawai'i (Nov. 3) and Idaho (Nov. 8).
Hawai'i has made 25 appearances in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) volleyball tournament and won four national titles. In 2006 they reached the regional finals and ended the season ranked ninth by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. After being picked by the WAC coaches to repeat as conference champions, the AVCA ranked them 10th in the pre-season poll.
New Mexico State, also on this year's home slate, reached the first-round of NCAA Tournament in 2006 and was ranked in the top 25 poll most of last season. The Aggies received votes by the AVCA in the 2007 pre-season poll.
"After seeing our team practice, I'm pretty confident people are going to like what they see," added Nieves. "We are going to be an exciting team. I think we are going to be a much improved team and I think we are going to be a team to be reckoned with. There are going to be a lot of exciting matches at the Save Mart Center."
Fresno State will play all of its home matches at the Save Mart Center in 2007.
