Bulldogs Make Game Three Tough for New Mexico State

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Aggies of New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams Thursday (Sept. 13) at the Save Mart Center. Game scores were 30-14, 30-18 and 30-25.
Fresno State, down 2-0, came back in the third game to get within one point at 24-23, after being down most of the game by as many as six, before the Aggies pulled out the win and the match.
Lexi Watson came in off the bench in the third game and had four kills on 17 attempts. Watson led the Bulldogs on Tuesday night against Oregon State with a .211 hitting percentage.
For the match, Fresno State was led by freshman Lauren Berger with a .273 hitting percentage and senior Alisha McKee with nine kills.
The Aggies, who reached the NCAA tournament last season and are one spot out of the AVCA top 25 poll this week, were led by Krista Altermatt with 21 kills and a .593 hitting percentage.
"I think that is the best we played since the second half of the Arkansas match," said head coach Ruben Nieves. "I thought we were doing a lot of good things out there. I like the way we made it a match in game three. I think that both teams felt like if we could pull off game three we could make it a match."
The win moves New Mexico State to 9-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Fresno State falls to 2-9 and 0-1 in the WAC.
