Undefeated St. Mary's Tops Fresno State 3-0

FRESNO, Calif. - After winning its first match of the 2007 season on Friday (Aug. 31) against UC Davis, the Fresno State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the undefeated St. Mary's Gaels Sunday (Sept. 1) at the Save Mart Center. The game scores were 30-23, 30-21 and 30-22.
Freshman setter Kasey Van Grouw led the Bulldogs with her third-career double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.
With a .286 hitting percentage, sophomore Kelly Leonardo led FS as she had five kills in 14 attempts.
St. Mary's (5-0), took a 6-0 lead in game one and the Bulldogs (1-5) were able to cut the lead to three, at 20-17 as Leonardo served for three-straight points and freshman Lauren Berger added a kill in the run.
"We were streaky this afternoon," said head coach Ruben Nieves. "We played well and played with St. Mary's for good stretches of the match. Then there were stretches where we just weren't good enough and that is when they pulled away in games."
The Gaels got off to another quick start in game two, at 5-0. Fresno State was able to tie it at 16 with Van Grouw serving before St. Mary's finished with a 14-6 run.
Game three saw the Bulldogs starting to heat up as they took their first lead of the match at 3-2. They were down by as many as 11 at 23-12 and 24-13 and were able to cut it to five before the Gaels finished the sweep.
St. Mary's outhit the Bulldogs .256 to .131 for the match. They were led by Megan York with 20 kills and nine digs.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State Volleyball team travels to Manhattan, Kansas on September 7-8 for three games in the Kansas State Invitational. The next Fresno State Volleyball match at home is Tuesday, September 11 on Proud to be an American Night against Oregon State at 7 p.m. in the Save Mart Center. All military, fire and police department employees get two free tickets by showing their badge/ID at the box office on the day of the game.
