`Dogs Get First Road Win in Dramatic Fashion

BOISE, Idaho - For the second time this season the Fresno State volleyball was down the first two games and came back to win in five as it defeated the host Boise State Broncos, 3-2, in Boise, Idaho Thursday (Sept. 20) in Bronco Gym with game scores of 28-30, 30-32, 30-16, 30-27 and 15-5.
Freshman Kasey Van Grouw had a career-high eight blocks to lead the team. She also had a career-high seven kills and led the team with a .375 hitting-percentage.
"I thought that the energy was really high going into game one and that carried on throughout the match," said Van Grouw.
Senior Angela Wiggins also had a season-high 19 kills and 18 digs and Alisha McKee tied her season-high with 19 kills as well.
Fresno State had 11 service aces for a new season-high. The Bulldogs previous high was five Aug. 25 against San Francisco. The Bulldogs also hit a season-high .429 in game five and .205 for the match, a season-high 68 kills, 59 assists and five solo blocks.
Both games one and game two came down to the wire with the Broncos prevailing in each. Both McKee and Lacey Gera had four kills in game one, along with Wiggins who hit a team-high .308.
McKee and Wiggins along with Lauren Berger tallied four kills a piece in game two as Berger hit .375. Van Grouw had three of her kills in this game and hit .500.
Game three was a runaway for the Bulldogs as they hit a match-high .300 and held BSU to a negative .024. McKee hit .429 for the game and had four kills. Wiggins added six kills.
Game four went back and forth with the Broncos having the lead as late as 25-24, when a kill by McKee gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 28-27.
Fresno State came out on fire with an 8-0 lead to start game five and took the match. Freshman Kelly Mason served the first six points for the Bulldogs.
This was the second 0-2 comeback for the Bulldogs this season as they also won the last three and the match against Arkansas at the Kansas State Invitational (Sept. 8), mounting the biggest comeback in school history.
"A team that is able to come back has a lot of heart," added Van Grouw. `Our team has a lot of drive and determination, and you can see that when we can win in five like that."
The Bulldogs improve to 2-1 in the WAC standings and 4-9 overall. Boise State drops to 0-3 in conference.
