'Dogs close weekend with 3-1 win over UC Irvine

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team defeated UC Irvine in four sets (25-20, 26-24, 18-25, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs improved to 2-4 on the season.
Jenna Legault led Fresno State with 18 kills, 16 digs and five service aces for her third double-double of the season. Brooke Jenkins added 11 kills, while Peyton Bitter finished with nine kills on .444 hitting. Brooklyn Washington added eight kills on a .538 clip.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State built an early 10-6 advantage behind a balanced attack that featured kills from Legault, Washington, Jenkins and Kiley Devery in the first set.
UC Irvine battled back to tie the set at 13, but the Bulldogs answered with kills from Bitter and Legault to regain control. Fresno State later pushed the lead to 24-18 behind a Washington kill, a Jenkins kill and an Anna Bolich service ace before Bitter closed out the opening set with a kill.
UC Irvine led 18-11 midway through the second set before Fresno State mounted a comeback. Legault sparked a 7-1 run that included a kill, a service ace, a Jenkins kill, and multiple Anteater attack errors to pull the Bulldogs within one at 19-18.
Trailing 23-20 later in the frame, Fresno State scored four straight points, capped by a Legault kill, to take a 24-23 lead. After UC Irvine tied the set at 24, Legault delivered another kill before an Anteater attack error gave the Bulldogs the 26-24 win and a 2-0 match advantage.
The third set stayed tight early, with neither team able to create much separation. Fresno State held an 11-10 lead before UC Irvine began to pull away.
The Anteaters used a 9-1 run to take a 19-12 advantage. Fresno State answered with a 5-0 run behind a Legault ace, a May kill and consecutive UC Irvine attack errors to cut the deficit to 19-17, but the Anteaters closed the set with six of the final seven points to force a fourth.
