FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State starts its much anticipated swimming and diving season Saturday (Oct. 18), on the campus of UC Santa Cruz. The `Dogs will go head-to-head with both the host Banana Slugs and the Spartans of San Jose State at 12 p.m.
"I'm so excited for the swimming and diving student-athletes," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "They've trained harder than they ever have in these last four weeks, and I'm trying to relax them and talk them through their nerves. This is a starting point for us and a chance for us to set our goals."
This will be the second home swim meet for Santa Cruz after hosting an Alumni meet last Saturday. The NCAA Division III school will host only one more home meet after this weekend's three-way battle. It's the only time the Bulldogs and Slugs will meet this season and both colleges will share this weekend as their season opener.
San Jose State is heading to Santa Cruz with a perfect 5-0 sweep in their belts at the inaugural Western Athletic Conference Shootout they attended last weekend in Las Cruces, N.M. The `Dogs and Spartans will meet twice later in the season and again for the WAC Championship in San Antonio, Texas.
The 200 medley relay will signal the start of the meet and the 200 free relay will close the meet. Saturday's competition will follow a standard 16-event collegiate dual format with the order of events as follows: 200 Medley Relay, 1000 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Fly, 50 Free, 1-meter diving, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 500 Free, 100 Fly, 3-meter Diving, 200 IM and 200 Free Relay.
