Gjoen Wins Three Events in First Collegiate Meet

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Heidi Gjoen (Oslo, Norway) and sophomore Kendra Weeks (Folsom, Calif.) were among several swimmers and divers who earned wins for the Fresno State Bulldogs on opening weekend in Santa Cruz, Calif., on Saturday. The Bulldogs (0-2) fell to UCSC 151-110 and to San Jose State 198-80 in final team scoring.
"There were a lot of nerves today but we did really well," said head swimming coach Jeanne Fleck. "We saw where we are starting from and we are going to make progress from here and we know how to get better."
Gjoen won three events on the day, the 100 backstroke vs. both opponents and the 200 back vs. UCSC while placing second in the 200 back vs. SJSU.
Also earning wins on the day was Mary Tess Taylor, a junior transfer from Granite Bay, Calif., in the 200 breaststroke vs. SJSU, Jordan Morillo (Lindsay, Calif.) in the 200 IM vs. UCSC and Stephanie Hatayama (Fresno, Calif.) in the 100 butterfly vs. UCSC.
Earning second place finishes were Hatayama in the 100 fly vs. SJSU and Taylor in the 200 IM vs. UCSC.
In the 500 free vs. SJSU, Kelli Sargent (Modesto, Calif.) and Morillo placed second and third, respectively.
"The medley relay with Heidi, Jordan, Stephanie (Hatayama) and Dedee (Torres) did really well and I was really please," Fleck added. "Those four started out the meet well for us."
Weeks won the 3-meter vs. UCSC and placed second in the 1-meter behind teammate Blair Hopkins (Fresno, Calif.) Weeks also placed second in the 3-meter vs. SJSU.
"The divers did well today," said head diving coach Taryn Ignacio. "I was really pleased and saw a lot of really good things from them."

The diving team has two weeks off before its next meet at San Diego State (Nov. 1), as the swimmers head to the Washington State Invitational on Oct. 24-25 in Pullman, Wash.
"Join the State - Fresno State" - The Fresno State swimming team returns to action Oct. 24-25 as it travels to Pullman, Wash., to compete in the Washington State Invitational. The diving team competes next at San Diego State on Nov. 1.
