FRESNO, Calif. - In their final home match of the 2008 season, the Fresno State Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 match to No. 6 Hawai'i in a Western Athletic Conference contest on Monday evening in the Save Mart Center. Set scores were 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17. Fresno State is now 6-17 on the year and 3-11 in WAC play.
The visiting Rainbow Wahine showed early on why they moved up in the polls this week to No. 6 as they took control early of the match in set one. Hawai'i got off to an early lead at 3-0 and would take set one 25-9.
"We had a new defense tonight but we worked through it and everyone stepped up," said outside hitter Lacey Gera. "The first set gave us a wake up call for sets two and three and we played a lot better."
The Bulldogs though, fought back to stay close in sets two and three, even forcing a Hawai'i timeout at 23-17 in set three. Hawai'i however, was able to fend off all of the Bulldogs' runs and take sets two and three to earn the sweep.
"In the third set we were able to gain some poise and make a little run against them so that was a plus," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell.
Freshman Baylee Platt (Clovis, Calif.) led the `Dogs with 10 kills on the night. Allanah Munson also helped the offensive attack by providing 20 assists.
Fighting Spirit Award
Tonight's `Fighting Spirit Award' went to Baylee Platt.
"Baylee stayed in the entire match," Netherby-Sewell said. "I was really proud of her tonight."
The Bulldogs hit the road to conclude regular season WAC play this week, traveling to Boise State on Thursday (6 p.m. match) and Idaho on Saturday (7 p.m. match.)
"I think we have a good opportunity in front of us against Boise State this week," Gera added.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs travel to Boise State in WAC play on Thursday, November 13 for a 6 pm match.
