`Dogs Split in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -On day two of the Campbell Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State, the Bulldogs struck early in game one as they defeated UCSB 8-0, before losing their first game of the year to San Diego State, 3-2. Fresno State is now 5-1 on the season while San Diego State improves to 7-1.
Game 1 Freshman Morgan Melloh pitched a gem once again. She had her second-straight complete game shutout as she allowed only four hits with six strikeouts against UC Santa Barbara.
The game was tied going into the fourth when senior Aja Scheuber hit her first home run of the season, a two-run bomb to left field which scored Andrea Ortega from first.
Up 2-0, the Bulldogs piled on the runs in the top of the fifth. Haley Gilleland singled to right and Mallory Perkins reached first on an error. With no outs, Gilleland stole third.
With one out, Jenna Cervantez doubled to right center which cleared the bases to give the `Dogs a 4-0 lead.
With the bases loaded, Lisamarie Coronado singled to the pitched which brought in a runner from third to make is 5-0. The Bulldogs would get two more runs off of infield hits to give them the 7-0 advantage.
Freshman Caitlin Stiglich hit her third home run in three games with a solo shot in the top of the seventh for the final score of 8-0.
Stiglich led the team with two hits and three runs. Junior transfer Aubrey Fast made her first appearance of the season late in the game as she came in as a pinch hitter and drew a walk.
Game 2 An infield hit for Jenna Cervantez and a two out single by Aja Scheuber started game two for the Bulldogs but they left runners on first and second against San Diego State in the first inning.
Jen Wiseneski for the Aztecs hit a triple to right field. With runners on second and third, freshman pitcher Nicole Angene was able to pitch out of the jam in the second.
The Bulldogs had their chance in the top of the third with a single up by the middle by Haley Perkins with one out. Caitlin Stiglich reached base and an infield hit by Aja Scheuber loaded the bases. Fresno State was unable to put any runs on the board and left the bases loaded.
San Diego State earned the first run of the ball game in the bottom of the third and took an early 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs extended their lead in the top of the fourth with a single to right field by Dani Sidoti that scored Jen Wisneski from third.
Morgan Melloh made her sixth appearance of the year as she replaced Angene in the bottom of the fourth with one out and runners on first and second.
Melloh struck out Tonye Mccorkle then Tamani Wells hit a double to right field which scored another run for the Aztecs to make it 3-0.
Lisamarie Coronado reached first on an error with one out in the top of the sixth and was followed by a single to left field by Haley Gilleland. Melloh hit a single of her own which scored Coronado to get the Bulldogs on the board and narrow the Aztecs lead to 3-1.
With one more chance in the top of the seventh, Cervantez had a stand up triple with one out and Stiglich had a sac bunt to first to score Cervantez but they were unable to get any more runs across and the Aztecs handed them their first loss of the year.
Angene was credited with the loss as she is now 1-1 on the season.

The next home game for the Bulldogs is a doubleheader Monday, February 25 at 6 p.m. against Eastern Michigan. February 25 is Monday Madness and general admission tickets are just $1 on game day.
