`Dogs Finish Round One in Eighth

FRESNO, Calif. -
The Fresno State men's golf team shot 283 to finish the round 5-under par at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course. The Bulldogs are five strokes behind the leaders in eighth place out of the 20-team field. Auburn, San Diego State, and Arizona are tied for first with 10-under par.
Sophomore Grant Doverspike is leading the Bulldogs after posting a 69 to tie for ninth place. Matt Ryan and Michael Gideon are tied for 30th after both shooting a 71. Todd Angel tied for 47th with a 72 and Brad Wyatt shot an 83 in 109th place.
"We lost a lot of strokes toward the end," said head coach Mike Watney. "The guys are kind of frustrated with the finish but we still played a lot of good golf hanging with a lot of good teams. They are determined to go out and shoot a solid round tomorrow."
Individually, Auburn's Jay Moseley, Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus and SDSU's Johan Carlsson all opened with 66 to tie for first. Eddie Olson of UNLV, Stephen Hale of California and SMU's James Minahan are all tied for fourth at five-under-par, followed by two golfers at four-under and nine golfers at three-under.
The tournament continues with a round tomorrow before the final round on Friday, Feb. 22. Both rounds will open at 8:00 a.m. HST with a shotgun start.
