Dogs and Cats Battle in Kansas

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite some strong rides by the Western team and an MVP performance from English rider Lisa Wells, Fresno State could not overcome Kansas State today, falling to the Wildcats 8-5 in a dual at Fox Creek Farms in Manhattan, Kans.
Wells, a junior who continues to have an excellent season, took home the MVP award in Equitation over Fences. The Dogs took the fences competition 2-1 with all four riders scoring in the 70s. Katie Nenneker won her match over Kendall Marvin with a score of 75. Cambria Kissell scored a 78 and Jennifer Jory had a 72.
"We are very excited for Lisa," said head coach Becky Malmo. "She continues to ride real well. We did have some performances that were considered personal bests but we just got beat by some other talented riders. I was a little disappointed in the Flat. We didn't get I done there. Kristen Sohns who's usually so reliable for us didn't have the horse she needed today. All in all, the ladies rode well. It just didn't go quite our way today."
Mallory Hames picked up Fresno State's lone victory in Equitation on the Flat with a score of 79. Caitlin Marshall had a strong ride with a 76, but lost her match by one point. Kelsey Bullock posted a ride of 72.
The Dogs won the Reining competition with a pair of victories. Keri Blackledge continues to have a strong season and won her match with a score of 69.5. Jill Tebbe won with a score of 67. Elizabeth Thomasian tied her match with a 67.5 score.
Although they didn't win a match, all four Bulldog Western Horsemanship riders scored a 73.5 or better. Asheline Beeson led the Dogs with a 75, followed by Danielle Escover (74.5), Adrianne Smith (74) and Rebecca Flood (73.5).
Fresno State travels to Oklahoma State for a dual meet against the Cowgirls on Saturday morning 8 a.m.
"We have another big day ahead of us Saturday morning in Oklahoma," said Malmo. "We are looking forward to that."
