Melloh and `Dogs Go 2-0 in Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 10/13 Fresno State softball team improved to 34-5 with a two-game non-conference sweep over UC Davis on Tuesday afternoon. Morgan Melloh picked up the wins in both games, a 4-0 start in game one and a 6-2 victory in relief in the final game.
Game One
Freshman pitcher Morgan Melloh would pitch her 12th shutout and 21st complete game as she earned her 22nd win of the season as the Bulldogs defeated UC Davis 4-0 in game one.
Jenna Cervantez and Ashley White both went 3-for-4 to lead the team.
The first hit of the game for either team would come off a single to center field in the top of the second by Cervantez.
Stiglich and Scheuber had back-to-back singles to left field with one out in the top of the third. White would follow with a single of her own to left to load the bases for Andrea Ortega.
Ortega would hit the first pitch to center for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
A single up the middle by Cervantez would bring in Scheuber for the 2-0 lead.
White would hit an infield single to lead off the top of the fifth. Michelle Palazuelos would enter to pinch run for her at first.
Cervantez would get her third hit of the game, a single up the middle and Palazuelos would advance to second.
A slow rolling infield hit by Nicole Angene would load the bases. Melloh would reach first on a fielder's choice.
Palazuelos would score on a wild pitch and a single to center field by Perkins would give the `Dogs the 4-0 advantage.
UC Davis would get its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth, a single to right field by Erin Emde. The Aggies would get the bases loaded, but Melloh would strike out the final two batters to end the inning.
Melloh would end the game with eight strikeouts.
The Bulldogs would tally 14 total hits.
Jessica Hancock fell to 10-14 on the season for the Aggies.
Game two
Melloh would earn her second win of the day as she entered in relief in the fourth for Angene. Melloh is now 23-3 on the season.
Perkins would lead off game two with an infield single. Haley Gilleland would get hit by a pitch from the Aggies starting pitcher Alex Holmes.
Stiglich, the team leader in double, would hit one to left field to score Perkins from second for the early 1-0 lead.
With still no outs, Scheuber would hit a single to left field to score Gilleland from third and advance Stiglich to third with a 2-0 advantage.
With a 1-0 count, Cervantez would hit a three-run home run to left field for a 5-0 lead in the first. Cervantez is now tied with Stiglich for a team-high seven home runs on the season.
Ortega would score from first off a double to left center by Cervantez for a 6-0 Bulldog lead in the top of the third.
The Aggies would get their first run of the day in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-1.
A stolen base by Gilleland in the top of the fourth would be her 14th on the season and move her up to fifth ion the single-season list in Fresno State history.
Ashley Johnson would hit a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth for the Aggies second run of the game.
With two Aggies on base and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Melloh would enter to replace Angene on the mound.
Melloh would strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh and the final five batters. She would have five strikeouts in game two and 15 total for the day.
The Bulldogs would earn the 6-2 game two victory and the series sweep. The Bulldogs improve to 5-0 all-time versus UC Davis.
The Bulldogs host Nevada in the WAC home opener Friday-Saturday.
