No. 17 Fresno State Beats LMU

FRESNO Calif. - The No. 17-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team dominated Loyola Marymount on Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center, beating the Lions 6-1 while improving to 14-7 on the season.
"I like the way we played at the top of the lineup; we took care of business," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "We played a tough LMU team, and I thought it was a positive weekend overall."
The `Dogs won the doubles point, winning all three matches, and took the momentum into singles to win five of six contests.
The doubles point was a breeze for the `Dogs with scores of 8-3, 8-2 and 8-5. Fourth-ranked juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe defeated Mesterova and Tanner, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. In the No. 3 spot, juniors Danon Beatty and Bruna Paes clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Nothnagel and Razloznik. Sophomores Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova, ranked 30th in the country, dominated at the No. 2 spot against Heckel and Morgan, 8-2.
In the singles matches, 14th-ranked Gloria defeated No. 67 Mesterova at the No. 1 spot winning convincingly 6-0, 6-1. Gloria won her 21st match of the season and the 84th of her career. She now sits sixth all-time in Fresno State history on the career singles wins list.
Petukhova quickly beat Tamara Tanner in the No.2 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 finishing in just 52 minutes.
Kucerkova trailed 4-1 in the first set at the No. 3 spot before winning five straight games to prevail on top, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 4 spot, Rowe also trailed 4-1 in the second set and won five straight games to capture a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Beatty played a strong singles match in the No. 5 spot defeating Audrey Bulkley, 6-1, 6-0.
The Bulldogs will host Long Beach State on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. They will play Cal Poly and Pacific as a doubleheader on Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
