FRESNO, Calif. - After a record-breaking season and being named to the All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team, it should be no surprise to the Bulldog faithful that senior point guard Kevin Bell was named the Most Valuable Player of 2007-08 Fresno State men's basketball season.
In addition to leading the team in scoring at 18.3 points per game, Bell broke the Bulldog career record for most assists with 599. He ranks among the top five players in Western Athletic Conference history for most assists and finished his career No. 20 on the Bulldog career scoring list with 1,165 points.
"Kevin Bell is a special young man," said head coach Steve Cleveland. "He's a leader for us on the court and a great ambassador of Bulldog basketball. I'm most proud that he's on track to graduate in May along with four others of our young men."
In addition to Bell's honor, the Bulldog coaching staff handed out awards to four other players during the annual Timeout Club Awards Banquet held at Pardini's Wednesday night.
The top defensive player of the year went to senior Alex Blair and the outstanding rebounder award went to senior Hector Hernandez. Blair led the Dogs with 25 blocked shots and Hernandez led the squad with 232 rebounds, an average of 7.3 per game.
Eddie Miller was named the Outstanding Offensive Player of the year. He led the WAC with 113 three-point field goals, second most in Fresno State history and third-most for a single season in the WAC.
Freshman Ned Golubovic won two awards, most Improved Player and the Coaches' Academic Award. He averaged 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in his first year in the Bulldog program, while starting nine games and playing in all 32.
