No. 12 Bulldogs Sweep Series at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Pitcher Morgan Melloh improved to 31-5 and the No. 12/12 Fresno State softball team improved to 42-8 and 8-3 in the WAC with two wins Saturday over San Jose State by scores of 1-0 (8) and 5-3. Fresno State swept the three-game series against the Spartans with the 2-0 victory on Friday.
Game One
With one out in the top of the eighth, Aja Scheuber would reach first on a fielder's choice. She would get to second after Jenna Cervantez walked. Brooke Phipps would enter from the flex position to pinch run for Scheuber.
A fly out to center field by Ashley White advanced the runners and Phipps would score off an error by the center fielder.
Bulldog pitcher Morgan Melloh would then strikeout the side in the bottom of the eighth as the Bulldogs won their second-straight game in eight innings over San Jose State.
Melloh finished with seven strikeouts in the game and gave up only four hits and one walk. The Bulldogs had seven hits, led by Haley Perkins with two.
Game Two
San Jose State would score its first runs of the series off a three-run home run in the bottom of the first by Brittany McConnell.
The Bulldogs would get on the board in the top of the second. After a Scheuber single to right field, she would score from first off a double to center by Caitlin Stiglich, her team-leading 12th of the year. Fresno State would cut the lead to 3-1.
Stiglich would hit her ninth home run of the year, a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth.
Nicole Angene would then walk to load the bases with one out in the top of the fourth. A walk to Haley Perkins would tie the game at 3-3.
A first-pitch single to right field by Haley Gilleland would bring in two runs for a 5-3 Bulldog lead.
With one out in the top of the fourth, the Spartans would replace starting pitcher Deanna Mauer with Jen Ames.
Gilleland would get her 18th stolen base of the season in the fourth, to tie her for second in a single-season with Becky Witt. She would then surpass Witt with her 19th stolen base of the season in the top of the sixth.
With seven strikeouts in game two, Melloh moved up two spots on the single-season strikeout list to fourth with 325 on the year. She surpassed Bulldog greats Amanda Scott and Jamie Southern.
Melloh also earned her 31st win on the year, to rank her fifth in a single-season and her 42nd appearance on the year in game two ranks her ninth in school history for a single-season.
The Bulldogs gathered nine hits in game two, two each by Scheuber, Stiglich and Andrea Ortega.
