FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 10 ranked Fresno State softball team improved to 43-8 on the year and 9-3 in WAC play with a 4-3 win over No. 24 Hawai'i Friday night at Bulldog Diamond. The loss drops the Rainbow Wahine to 33-15 overall and 7-5 in the WAC.
Haley Perkins would lead off the bottom of the first for the Bulldogs with a single to right field. She would score with two outs from second on a bloop single to left field by Aja Scheuber.
Hawai'i would tie the game in the top of the second at 1-1.
Jenna Cervantez would give the `Dogs the lead once again in the bottom of the third with two outs, as she hit a solo home run to left field. It would be the 11th home run of the season for Cervantez to tie her for 10th in a single season. She now has 25 home runs in her career to rank her seventh all-time.
Caitlin Stiglich would hit her team-leading 12th double of the season to lead off the top of the fourth.
Scheuber would get her second hit of the game, a single to center field to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Brooke Phipps would pinch run and score on a two-run home run by Andrea Ortega with two outs to extend the Bulldogs lead to 4-1. It was Ortega's second home run of the year.
Audrey Andrade would hit a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. Bulldog pitcher Morgan Melloh would get the leadoff batter Tanisha Milca to ground out to Haley Gilleland at shortstop to end the game.
Melloh improves to 32-5 in the circle for the Bulldogs, now ranking her solely in fifth place in a single-season at Fresno State with 32 wins. She also made her 43rd appearance on the season, ranking her eighth in a single season.
The Bulldogs and Rainbow Wahine will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Game one can be heard live on 1430 ESPN Radio.
