Bulldogs Conclude Season at NCAA

FRESNO, Calif. -
The Bulldogs concluded the 2007-08 season with an 18th place finish at the NCAA Div. I West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. For the first time in the four-year program the women's golf team advanced to the NCAA Regionals with an automatic bid after winning the WAC Championships.
Fresno State had its best round on Saturday shooting a 296 to finish 44-over par 908. The Bulldogs took 18th place under emotional circumstances. Father of head coach Angie Cates, Bevan Cates died Friday night while in Sacramento to support the team. Cates had been a big supporter of the team and helped celebrate the win with the team at the WAC Championships.
"The team played with heavy hearts today," said Cates. "They are so brave. My dad would've wanted them to be out there, he is their biggest fan and I know he was walking the fairways with them. I love them all very much. I thank them for playing in his honor today."
Taylor Siebert led the `Dogs throughout the tournament and finished tied for 22nd place. Siebert carded 73-75-73 to finish five-over par 221. Siebert had nine birdies in the three-round tournament.
Senior Laura Luethke improved each round with 77-75-74 - 226 to tie for 44th place. Sophomore Hali Coppin also shot a 74 on Saturday to tie for 80th place with a 232 total. Freshman Chelsea Czinski had a counting score for the team with a 75, her new career low. Czinski and Pia Escandon tied for 89th place with 19-over par 239.
The Trojans, who were the top seeded team in the 21-team field, led following each of the three rounds and finished with a team score of 855. Arizona State finished second in the 21-team field at 870 and was followed in the top seven by UNLV (879), Arizona (880), Oklahoma State (882), Arkansas (882) and Tulsa (884). UC Davis upset some of the powers to claim the eighth and final spot which advances to the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque.
Individually, Therese Koelbaek of UNLV and Alison Walshe of Arizona tied for medalist honors. Koelbaek, who had shot 69-68 during the first two rounds, carded 73 on Saturday. Walshe bounced back from a second-round 73 with a 69 in the final round. Both players finished with a 54-hole total of 210.
Stanford's Angela King and San Jose State's Erica Moston will also advance to the NCAA Championships after recording the top two individual totals from players not among the top eight teams. King shot 73-73-71-217 while Moston fired 73-74-71-218.
The tournament was co-hosted by Sacramento State and Placer Valley Tourism.
