FRESNO, Calif. - Strong performances by David Deal, Matt Bushnell, and Roy Phelps in the decathlon put Fresno State men's track and field on top after day two of the WAC Championships. Deal, a freshman, shot the Bulldogs out of the blocks, winning silver in the decathlon with 6,481 points.
Bushnell just missed the podium with 6,302 points and a fourth place finish, while Phelps was just back in fifth and 5,990 points.
Deal moved into second Thursday after finishing Wednesday's five events in third. The freshman placed among the top three in six of the decathlon's events to take second behind defending champion John Strang of Utah State.
Bushnell won the decathlon's 400-meter dash and placed second in three other events to take fourth in the ten-part event. Phelps, a senior, won the pole vault to leap into fifth-place.
