FRESNO, Calif.- - Sue Behme is first ever Fresno State women's lacrosse coach. Recently she sat down with Gobulldogs.com to talk about her decision to come to Fresno State.
1- What intrigued you about the job at Fresno State?
The development of a Division I program is a great challenge, ability to build a tradition of excellence academically & athletically, promote the development of women's lacrosse in the Valley, and throughout Fresno, and California.
2- How did you first get involved with lacrosse?
In college at Cortland State after my freshman soccer season. My grandfather played at Syracuse University for two seasons.
3- What is an interesting fact people may now know about you?
I raced mountain bike professionally for Team Ted Wojcik/ Chase & I played on the
USA Team Handball National Team in the Pan American Championships in Brazil.
4- What should people know about the sport of women's lacrosse?
It is fast, fun, exciting, and with extra effort you can become good quickly at
the sport.
5- In your first 90 days on the job what is your main task(s)?
To promote the fact that Fresno State has a Division I program and we have the full support of the University. To find student-athletes in the community, at Fresno
State, and in the high school 08' class that want to play at the Division I level and be a part of history at Fresno State. Hire two assistants and move to California!
6- What are the challenges of starting a lacrosse program out west?
Right now, lacrosse is new in this area and I have to do a lot of explaining what
women's lacrosse is all about. Provide the needed support to the youth development
& middle school & high school coaches.
7- What is your coaching philosophy?
I want to provide my student-athletes with a challenging, positive, and supportive environment to grow as a player and as a person. I want to leave a positive lasting impression on all of the people that I come in contact with both on and off the
lacrosse field as well as our program having that same impact. I believe that as an elite student-athlete your true character can shine through if you are willing to put the commitment, passion, and drive into everything you do. I need to walk my talk and so does our staff and the players. When you do this you give off a positive energy that makes dreams reality.
8- Will you get out and practice with your athletes?
In certain ways and times. I don't want the players to get used to me being on the field with them. I always train our goalkeepers daily.
9- Why should student athletes come to Fresno State?
Because you have the opportunity of a lifetime to play at a top Division I athletic program and be part of lacrosse history at Fresno State. You will play great teams and have fun working hard.
10- What is your favorite memory you have playing lacrosse?
In 1993,I played in the North/South Senior All-Star game at Johns Hopkins with all of the top Division I and Division II top players in the country.
