FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's men's basketball coach Steve Cleveland announced the addition of Brandon Sperling to the Bulldog roster with an Athletic Aid Agreement for the 2008-09 season.
"Brandon Sperling is a 6'3" combo guard who can play the point or the wing position," Cleveland said. "Brandon will compete at both positions. He is a local young man who has been under the radar in terms of national recruiting."
Sperling earned All-League and All-City honors at Buchanan High School during the 2007-2008 season and is expected to contribute immediately for the Bulldogs.
"I believe that Brandon has the potential to have an immediate and positive impact in our program," Cleveland added. "Brandon is a late bloomer whose athleticism and basketball IQ have contributed greatly to his marked improvement as a player over the past year."
During his senior season for Buchanan, Sperling averaged 16.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 2.4 steals per contest while turning around a Bear program that picked up a pair of a huge wins over the Clovis West Golden Eagles, 80-74 and 52-51.
Sperling also excelled in the classroom and applied his academic prowess toward improving his play on the court.
"He is an outstanding student (3.75 GPA) and also a very cerebral player on the floor," Cleveland added.
Sperling will be eligible to play during the upcoming 2008-09 season, which officially starts Friday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. as the `Dogs face Sacramento State.
Harvey set to transfer to NAIA school
Coach Cleveland also announced that junior Bryan Harvey will not be back for another season with the Bulldogs. He released the following statement:
"Bryan Harvey will not be returning to Fresno State this coming year. Bryan has had a good spring semester where he is academically in good standing and on track to graduate next year. Bryan and I both agree that it would be in his best interest to transfer to an NAIA school and get a new start. Bryan is considering a few schools that are in the close proximity to Louisville where he has several close friends. Bryan will try and make a decision in the next two weeks. I wish Bryan the very best in all of his athletic and academic endeavors. This will free up another scholarship for either the 08-09 or 09-10 season.
