FRESNO, Calif. - With the fast approach of the 2008-2009 swimming and diving season, many current Fresno State students are making their own return to the pool, hoping to gain a solid focus that will benefit them both in the pool and academically.
Junior Kasey Madden, a Fresno native and double major in French and Women's Studies, chose to join the team when she heard that it was being brought back.
"When I heard Fresno State was going to have a team again I was very excited," said Madden. "I really missed the chlorine and the pool deck. I believe the team will inspire high school athletes to go to college and inspire current swimmers to keep their grades up."
Head coach Jeanne Fleck will lead the team along with assistant coach RYan Purdy and head diving coach Taryn Ignacio. In addition to current students, five swimmers and divers singed National letters of Intent earlier this summer to attend Fresno State.
Junior Becky Geisinger, a transfer student from the Bay Area, has also chosen to join the team for the 2008-2009 season.
"Swimming is what makes me go," said Geisinger. "I look forward to getting back in the water, training with my team, pushing each other and succeeding. Team work is going to be a big bonus. With teamwork I believe anything can be accomplished."
Swimming and diving is one of two NCAA Division I teams that Fresno State added last winter, and begins its season in October at UC Santa Cruz.
