FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State loses a tough match 3-2 in the home opener against UC Davis. The Bulldogs played a majority of the game without Ali Sill, leaving only two seniors on the field. The young `Dogs stepped up and showed great effort.

"The first half was tough, we lacked energy and we were not attacking," said Head Coach Steve Springthorpe.

Fresno State went down 1-0 after Jordan Martin scored on a through ball from Gabina Bohlman. The first half saw few shots from both teams.

"We went down 1-0 and we had to play catch up, which uses up a lot of energy," said Springthorpe. "We weren't winning 50/50 balls and lacked plays in the midfield."

In the second half the Bulldogs came out with energy and enthusiasm. In the 66th minute, sophomore Elora Martinez volleyed the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Bradlee DeShane.

"The second half we came out and made some things happen," said Springthorpe. "We got a nice goal and started to pick up the pace."

Senior Nicole Gutierrez was able to beat an Aggie defender and score putting the Bulldogs up 2-1.

After a scramble in the box by the Bulldog defense a foul was called and the Aggies were awarded a penalty kick. Samantha Faber knocked the ball passed Kaitlyn Revel to even out the score at 2-2.

The final goal of the game came in the 83rd minute and Rochelle VanBuskirk scored after following a missed shot.

"We let our guard down and ultimately we used up a lot of energy having to play catch up," said Springthorpe.

Revel had a total of nine saves in the game, while Gutierrez had four shots.

Fresno State travels to Bakersfield on Aug. 29 to face the Roadrunners at 7 p.m.

"Join the State, Fresno State!" - The Bulldogs take the road as they travel to take on Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, August 29th at 7 pm. The Bulldogs return home on Sunday, August 31st as they host Cal Poly at Bulldog Stadium at 1 pm. Tickets for the home game on the 31st are buy one get one free at the Bulldog Ticket Office.
