Watermelon Run Draws 200 Runners

FRESNO, Calif. - Community members and Fresno State athletes gathered for the annual Watermelon Run Saturday.
"This was a great chance for us connect with the community," said track and field head coach Scott Winsor. "It was great to see how involved people in the area are with our program."
More than 200 people participated in the race which featured a two- and four-mile competition.
Former Fresno State cross country runner, Roosevelt Cook, won the four-mile competition with a time of 19:53. Marissa McPhail was the first female finisher in the longer race, clocking in at 25:52, with Briana Cleary on her heels at 25:53.
Benny Madrigal championed the two-mile race finishing in 9:26. Madrigal's time puts him in sixth in Watermelon Run history in the two-mile. Isai Orea, who finished second, is now ninth all-time with his finish of 9:30. Kaili Zink led the women with a time of 11:34.
Continuing the tradition, racers were met at the finish line with watermelon slices.
"We went through 50 watermelons," said Winsor. "But I don't have any idea know how many pounds."
While Fresno State cross country runners participated in the race, the event is not part of the Bulldog's competitive season.
"We got a lot of feedback on our team," said Winsor. "And that is helpful as we head into the season."
The Bulldogs season begins with the Nevada Twilight on Aug. 29 in Reno, Nev.
