FRESNO, Calif.- With the start of Fresno State swimming and diving practice on Monday (Sept. 8) came another fresh start for freshman swimmer Heidi Gjoen, of Oslo, Norway, who chose to make herself part of the Bulldog athletics family while pursuing an education.
A former member of a Norwegian swim club, Gjoen joined the Bulldog swim team after a busy summer swim schedule, including participation at the Norwegian Nationals, where her medley relay team not only won, they broke a national record.
How did you get started swimming? I got started because my cousin swam and I wanted to try it. I started when I was about ten.
What has been your greatest accomplishment so far as an athlete? Going to the Norwegian Nationals in Hamar. We won the 400 medley relay and broke a national record.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future? I hope to improve. It's cool to combine school with sports. It isn't like that in Norway.
Who is your most influential role model? I trained with a girl in Norway, Sara Nordenstam, who went to the Olympics and took the bronze. She surprised everyone.
What was the best advice you've ever received from a coach? To have fun when you practice and compete because you want to.
Why did you choose Fresno State? It is a great opportunity to swim and there is a great school spirit. Its great and it's a big deal to do sports.
