FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team continues their win streak with a 1-0 win over Florida International. Megan Ashjian scored the game winning goal.
The Bulldogs gained early control of the game both offensively and defensively.
"It was a good hard battle from both teams," said Coach Steve Springthorpe. "I have to give Thomas (Chesnutt) credit his team battled hard and was organized. We were fortunate to get a nice goal from Megan."
The defense had several huge stops in the midfield and only allowed the ball pass the half line a few times. The `Dogs defense stepped to the ball early and not letting the Golden Panthers to start any attacks on goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel.
The offense threatened the Gold Panther goalkeeper early in the game. Molly Nizzoli got an early shot off a cross from Gutierrez, but Melanie Raimo came up with the save. The Bulldogs had another close call on a through ball from Ali Sill to Nicole Gutierrez. Gutierrez's shot went wide.
Fancy footwork and great passing in the midfield created several attacks for the Bulldog offense.
Megan Ashjian scored on a header received from Laura Dodd, but was called back due to offsides.
The score at halftime was 0-0. Fresno State was out shooting Florida International eight to one.
Fresno State continued to take shots at goalkeeper Raimo. Nizzoli fired a shot on goal that hit the cross bar.
In the 70th minute of play Ashjian launched the ball into the back of the net from about 35 yards out.
"It is an indescribable feeling," said Ashjian. "I am just so happy to be out on the field again."
Sill recorded her first assist of the season off Ashjian's goal. Revel ended the game with one save and her second shutout of the season.
"This game was a great team effort," said Springthorpe. "Everyone played with desire and passion. Not one player stood out and they played well as a whole."
