GREEN BAY, Wis. - After falling the first set, the Fresno State volleyball team came out with a new spark in set two for an impressive 3-1 win over Northern Arizona in the opening match of the Country Inn and Suites/Green Bay Classic in Green Bay, Wis., Friday night. Set scores were 21-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19.
Northern Arizona came out strong as they had the lead, 20-9 in the first set. Fresno State fought back however, and went on a 9-0 run to get back into the set. The Lumberjacks held on though for the 25-21 victory.
Fresno State used the momentum it created at the end of set one to win big in sets two-four for the match victory. One big reason Fresno State got back into the match was its 12 service aces, a season-high. Sophomore Kasey Van Grouw led the team with four of her own.
"We did a lot better focusing on ourselves and not the other team to get back into the match," said Baylee Platt. "We started passing better and communicated better and ended up on top."
Freshman Platt earned her first start of the season and was impressive with a career-high 21 kills and a .317 hitting percentage. Allanah Munson added a career-high 49 assists and 18 digs. Fresno State had seven blocks compared to two for NAU and 58 total kills. The Bulldogs also had a season high .263 hitting percentage as a team.
"The win feels great," said sophomore Lauren Berger. "It gives us more confidence going into two tough matches tomorrow."
The win improves Fresno State to 2-2 on the year and hands the Lumberjacks their first loss on the year (3-1). Fresno State continues tournament play taking on UW-GB at 9 a.m. PST Saturday and the Drake at 3 p.m. PST.
