FRESNO, Calif. -
Fresno State athletics gave back to the community in large portion during the 2008 fall semester. Even with school and practice keeping Bulldog student-athletes busy the athletics department has completed over 1,544 hours of community so far this school year.
"It is one of the biggest things I have been impressed with here at Fresno State, is the willingness to help people and volunteer in the community," said track and field head coach Scott Winsor, who came to Fresno State from Notre Dame. "The student-athletes are asked to do a lot and their time is precious and still they all find time to volunteer."
The Bulldog track and field team leads with 309 total hours of service. In their inaugural season, the lacrosse team stands in second with 214 hours and the reigning champions, women's basketball, rounded out the top three with 186 hours.
"It is important to us that our student athletes become active members of our community," said women's basketball head coach Adrian Wiggins. "Fresno and the Central Valley have been so wonderful to us over the years and we feel it is our responsibility to give back to this great community."
The teams have participated in numerous events throughout the Valley including visits to Valley Children's Hospital, reading with elementary children, and participating in Big Heroes/ Little Heroes.
