FRESNO, Calif. - In the 60th minute of regulation time Laura Dodd scored the game-winning goal giving the Fresno State women's soccer team the, 1-0, win over Louisiana Tech. This is the first WAC home win for the Bulldogs. The team is 2-1 in WAC play and 4-9 overall.
"I am really pleased with the first home WAC victory," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "The team really stuck to the game plan and I thought that we executed it in a way that allowed us to control the game. We weren't as dangerous or consistent as we are striving for, but we looked like we were in control."
The Bulldogs were greeted on the field by a tunnel made up of members of the TopSoccer program. TopSoccer is a local soccer league for children with special needs.
The teams battled most of the first half in the middle of the field. The `Dogs dominated play and their only shot of the half came from Vanessa Gonzalez on a free kick outside the 18-yard box.
The Bulldogs went into halftime tied with the Lady Techsters, 0-0.
Kendall VanDine threw the ball into Rachel Pickett inside the 18-yard box. Pickett dropped the ball back to Laura Dodd, who put the ball in the top right corner of the goal giving the Bulldogs the lead, 1-0.
"Kendall and Rachel set me up perfectly for the goal," said Dodd. "Once I got the ball I hit it and it went in. I couldn't have made the goal without the other two setting it up. Overall, it was a great win for all of us."
Dodd has two goals on the season. Pickett and VanDine recorded assists on the play. "We were building a situation that was meant to be dangerous and as unorthodox as the goal may have been," said Zwaschka. "We had players in the right position and caused them to be out of position. It's a testament to the activity and aggression of the team."
Moments later, Dodd headed the ball high over the goal just missing her second goal of the afternoon.
The `Dogs outshot the Lady Techsters, 8-6, with four shots on goal. Dodd, Molly Nizzoli, Krissy Looney and Callie Hancock all contributed shots on goal for Fresno State.
The Bulldogs earned their fourth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel has three shutouts this year and tied the all-time career shutout record at Fresno State with 23. She ended the game with two saves.
"It's a nice feeling, but at the same time I have to think about the people that helped me get the shutout and the record," said Revel. "The three years I have been here I have been with three great backlines."
"It's awesome," said Zwaschka. "All I asked of the defense was to have 100 percent focus. The defense and Kaitlyn stayed sharp, which was really important because in the last 10 minutes Louisiana tech was pushing for the equalizer."
The Bulldogs hit the road next week facing Utah State on Friday and Nevada on Sunday.
"We Are Your Team" - The Boise State Broncos will be in town on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. to take on your Fresno State Bulldogs.
