FRESNO, Calif. - The Western Athletic Conference named Paul Zwama the men's cross country athlete of the week Tuesday for his stellar performance at the Bronco Invitational.
Zwama, a junior from Leens, Netherlands (CSG Dingstede), led Fresno State with a second place finish in Sunnyvale, Calif. Zwama finished just one second behind the top finisher at the event, Santa Clara's Robbie Reid.
Zwama's 24:33 time in the 8K marked a career-best and team-best, leading the team competitors to help the Bulldogs to a second place team finish.
The second place finish was the team's best this season and just three points back of first-place Long Beach State. The Bulldogs' silver medal put them ahead of conference foes Boise State, which took third with 126 points, New Mexico State and San Jose State, as well as NCAA West Regional competitors Stanford, California, UC Davis, San Francisco, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Pepperdine and Saint Mary's.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams have a week off before heading to Reno, Nev., for the WAC Championships on Oct. 31.
Other Men's Nominees included: Sawyer Bosch, Boise State; Robert Selph, New Mexico State; Alfredo Coronado, San Jose State; Brian McKenna, Utah State.
