FRESNO, Calif. - Fall ball has concluded for the Fresno State lacrosse team and coach Sue Behme couldn't be more pleased with the direction her team is headed after three scrimmages.
The Bulldogs first scrimmage was the Alumni game on Oct. 11 followed by scrimmages at Cal on Oct. 18 and this past Sunday the team scrimmaged at UC Davis.
"I think we have had a very successful fall so far," Behme said. "We have a long way to go but we moved forward in a positive direction."
The majority of the team got their first taste of Division I lacrosse on Oct. 18 when they scrimmaged at Cal against fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents Cal, Stanford, Saint Mary's and UC Davis.
"It was a great experience for our team to play against some really good competition," Behme said. "For our 14 freshman it was the first time they had ever played in a collegiate scrimmage. This was so crucial for them and the team. The Cal trip was a great measuring stick and helped us prepare for our last competition this past Sunday at UC Davis."
During the UC Davis practice games, the Bulldogs played 30 minute scrimmages with a running clock against UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis and Stanford. The Bulldogs and UC Davis played each other twice. Against UC Santa Barbara, the Bulldogs won 6-2 and in the second scrimmage against UC Davis, the Dogs lost 9-2.
Going into the final two scrimmages the Bulldogs made key improvements and lost to UC Davis 7-6 and Stanford 5-3.
"We turned a corner going into the afternoon and made great strides," Behme said. "We were focused and played with confidence. The coaching staff couldn't be more proud of where we started this fall and where we are heading. To end on such a positive note at UC Davis in the afternoon was proof to the team that they are capable of great things."
"We Are Your Team" - Spend your Halloween with the Bulldogs when they take on the Utah State Aggies. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. It will also be Youth Football Day at Bulldog Stadium.
