FRESNO, Calif. - Coming off a semi-final finish at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championships, Bhavik Patel has started his sophomore season on a torrid pace.
Patel and San Jose State's Katrina Delen-Briones have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for October.
Through two tournaments, his season scoring average is 69.00, third-best in the NCAA. He's just one of eight players with a sub-70 average. He has shot par-or-better in all five of his rounds this season with three of his five rounds in the 60s. He ranks 15th in the GolfStat Cup points standings. He's been especially good on par 4 holes with a scoring average of 3.90, the second-best of any college player.
Patel, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield HS), played in two tournaments last month, placing second at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic and tying for eighth at California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. In the first tournament in Reno, Patel shot under par in all three rounds for a second place finish of 8-under par 208 (71-67-70). A week later, he had a 5-under par 137 (71-66) in the rain-shortened tournament in Fairfax, Calif.
His 66 is tied for the fourth best round by any WAC player this year. Patel's scoring average of 69.0, leads all WAC players.
Fresno State's Hali Coppin was nominated for the WAC Women's Golfer of the Month.
"We Are Your Team" The Bulldog men's golf team returns to action Nov. 2-4 at the University of Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
